What sets our products apart from all the other tallow skincare in Australia?
The tallow skin care industry is quickly becoming a saturated market (pun intended). It's so wonderful to see everyone appreciating animal based diets and skin care, however, sometimes, that can cause haste and corner cutting when it comes to properly prepared products that are actually going to make a difference to your skin, and worth spending your money on!
Drawing inspiration from ancient wisdom, Gaia Uncovered introduces a modern skincare philosophy. Our scientifically developed product range harmoniously promotes skin restoration by nurturing the skin barrier and preserving the integrity of the acid mantle. Additionally, our formulations support the skin biome's natural healing processes. In our products, essential oils and fragrances are eschewed in favor of direct infusion of whole plant matter, harnessing their active compounds, vitamins, and minerals.
But first, what is tallow?
In short, tallow is rendered beef fat. We use beef suet for our tallow, which is the prized fat that surrounds the kidneys. It has been used for millennia for cooking, soap making, salves & balms, and lubricant in wood work. It's really an all rounder!
What are the topical application benefits of tallow?
- Naturally rich in fat soluble vitamins A, D, E. This combination of vitamins can only be found in animal products. All you need is tallow!
- 1:1 ratio of Omega 3 to 6, which help maintain the structure and barrier of the skin, especially helpful for eczema and rosacea.
- Stearic acid and oleic acid are fatty acids that are found in the outer layer of our skin, and in our sebum. They are softening, moisturizer, regenerative, and anti inflammatory. Stearic acid helps to repair skin, improve the flexibility of skin, improves skin’s barrier function. Oleic acid helps the various beneficial nutrients penetrate deeply into skin.
- Palmitoleic acid, one of the basic building blocks of our skin, which decreases as we age.
- Palmitic acid helps improve the smoothness of skin, and helps with skin’s barrier function, and decreases as we age.
- Ceramides create a barrier and lock in moisture and protect the skin from environmental damage, keeping dryness, dehydration and premature signs of aging at bay.
Contrary to popular belief, tallow is NOT comedogenic. It, in fact, closely resembles the make-up of human skin and is quite beneficial when applied topically. It works as an amazing moisturiser and can be fantastic for acne-prone skin.
Our tallow
Our tallow is 100% grass-fed, sourced from the pristine Southern Highlands of NSW. The animals are pasture raised and are free from antibiotics and hormones. The animals are carefully handled to ensure a stress-free environment.
Scientifically backed
Our founder, Daria, has a background in Acupuncture, Herbal Medicine, Human Biology and Physiology & Chemistry. Apart from her official qualifications, Daria has poured countless hours into skincare chemistry research. Our formulations are carefully crafted to mimic our ancestral roots, whilst using modern science to optimise the effectiveness and delivery of actives to the skin.
Triple purified & 100% grass-fed, hormone & antibiotic free suet tallow
Our tallow is sourced from the pristine Southern Highlands of NSW. The cows spend their days on the pastures in the sunlight, living healthy, happy, stress-free lives. Beef suet is the prized fat around the kidneys/organs of the animal. We use only beef suet in the manufacturing of our products.
Our tallow undergoes a triple purification process. This creates a pure product with minimal odour. Please note, while we strive for minimal odour, it is hard to control each batch as we use 100% natural ingredients. The scent of our tallow is dependent on the seasons and the pastures the cows graze upon.
No Essential Oils
We do not add any essential oils to our products.
Whilst it is a nice idea to replace synthetic fragrances with EOs in your skin care, in reality, they can still wreak havoc. They still contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and can cause irritation in most people when applied topically (even diluted).
Essential oils contain no vitamins, no minerals, no antioxidants, no fatty acids, and no triglycerides.
EOs are also highly unsustainable. To make a single essential oil, can take thousands of plants. This means industrial scale agriculture and mono cropping. This takes a huge toll on our soil and depletes it of essential nutrients.
Instead, we use whole botanicals
Essential oils are only a small piece of the puzzle when it comes to plant medicine. Our products contain whole plant constituents. We use a traditional, millennia-old technique of infusing our products with whole botanicals, not only for their scent, but also for their array of healing benefits.
An essential oil is only 1% of the entire plant. When using the whole plant, you also benefit from its alkaloids, flavonoids, vitamins, minerals and trace elements, and other active compounds.
No Seed Oils
Seed oils are high in PUFAs (polyunsaturated fatty acids). PUFAs are highly unstable and are easily oxidised when exposed to heat or light, creating free radicals and causing skin damage, inflammation and premature ageing. Applying seed oils to your skin is just as bad as eating them.
We do not use high PUFA oils like almond oil, sunflower oil, argan oil & rosehip oil in our products.
Hand made, small batch
We are a mum-owned family business. All of our products are 100% hand made in small batches in Camden, NSW, Australia. Small batch production allows us to modify our formulas according to seasons and use natural/minimal preservatives.
